Gently curved spine for comfortable, balanced control at a variety of combing angles.

If you use Camellia oil, this comb helps distribute it more evenly, allowing you to achieve better coverage while using less.

Bring Out Hair's Natural Beauty

Tsuge (boxwood) is a super-dense, fine-grained hardwood containing countless microscopic pores.

As you comb, these tiny pores help distribute your hair's natural oils in thin, even layers, bringing out its natural gloss and helping hair look smoother and healthier.

Reduce Frizz

Unlike plastic combs, tsuge does not generate static electricity during use. It works with your hair rather than against it.

 Prevent Damage

Unlike molded plastic combs, hand-polished teeth have no rough seam lines that can catch hair and cause breakage or split ends.

About Tokigushi Combs

A Tokigushi is the traditional Japanese comb for everyday grooming. Toki, from the verb toku, refers to combing or untangling; gushi, or kushi, means comb.

Tokigushi combs are traditionally made from tsuge, or boxwood, a slow-growing, exceptionally dense hardwood prized for its fine grain and ability to take a high polish.

To make a comb, wood is harvested from mature tsuge trees, then cleaned, smoked, and slowly dried. The smoking process strengthens the wood, helps protect it from insects, and gives the comb its subtle smoky scent.

After drying, only the finest pieces are selected for handcrafting through multiple stages of shaping, cutting, polishing, and treating with camellia oil.

How to Care for Your Comb

Tsuge combs perform best when occasionally cleaned with camellia oil. Over time, they become smoother and more polished, while the wood develops a deeper, richer color.

  • Every comb comes with a 5 ml bottle of our wildcrafted Camellia oil. Use a soft toothbrush and a few drops of camellia oil to clean your comb. Wipe with a soft cloth.
  • Store your comb in its pouch, purse, or vanity drawer as you would any fine personal accessory.

Every comb comes with a 5 ml bottle of our wildcrafted camellia oil.

    Mom is Awestruck!

    Posted by b0hemian on 3rd May 2015

56 years ago, Mom left home and had to leave behind her tsuge comb. After I heard that story, I bought this tsuge comb with the handle embellished with sakura carving. LOVELIER in person than online! Mom was speechless yet was all smiles. She truly appreciates the craftsmanship put into this comb and was very happy to receive the sample tea and the small washcloth. It all reminded her of home, since Wawaza is in her home town. I’m glad that Wawaza exists; it maintains the bond between me and Mom. FAST shipping and no hidden damages in-transit. I will be ordering one of these combs for myself to use during the day (I use the cleansing comb at night) and a bottle of the Camelia oil to refill both of our 5 mL bottles for our combs. Thank you, Wawaza, for making my mom’s spirit sing!
