How to Care for Your Comb

Tsuge combs perform best when occasionally cleaned with Camellia oil. Over time, they become smoother and more polished, while the wood develops a deeper, richer color.

• Use a soft toothbrush and a few drops of Camellia oil to clean your comb. Wipe with a soft cloth.

About Tokigushi Combs

A Tokigushi is the traditional Japanese comb for everyday grooming. Toki, from the verb toku, refers to combing or untangling; gushi, or kushi, means comb.

Tokigushi combs are traditionally made from tsuge, or boxwood, a slow-growing, exceptionally dense hardwood prized for its fine grain and ability to take a high polish.

To make a comb, wood is harvested from mature tsuge trees, then cleaned, smoked, and slowly dried. The smoking process strengthens the wood, helps protect it from insects, and gives the comb its subtle smoky scent.

After drying, only the finest pieces are selected for handcrafting through multiple stages of shaping, cutting, polishing, and treating with Camellia oil.
