Posted by Yoshi Kai on 6th Oct 2024
As the air cools and the leaves change color, the Japanese welcome autumn with a deep appreciation for the tradition of "sensing the season" (kisetsukan). One of the seasonal highlights is roasted chestnuts (yaki-guri), a nostalgic and comforting treat found at street stalls or made at home.
Quick-Roasted Chestnut Recipe
Roasting chestnuts is easier than it seems! All you need are fresh chestnuts and a little time to bring this fall treat to life.
Ingredients: 1kg (2.2 lb) chestnuts
Serves: 6
Preparation time: Less than 30 minutes
Cooking time: 25-30 minutes
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Using a small, sharp knife, cut a cross into the skin of each chestnut. This will help them roast evenly and make peeling easier.
- Place chestnuts on a baking tray cut side up.
- Roast for 25-30 minutes until they crack open and the inner skin peels back.
- Once done, peel while warm for the best flavor!
Tip: Serve them hot with a little sea salt, or enjoy them plain for a wholesome snack.
Roasted chestnuts, with their warm, nutty flavor, perfectly capture the season's spirit. This simple dish celebrates nature's bounty, whether enjoyed on a chilly evening or as part of a family gathering. Try it this autumn and savor the essence of traditional Japan!
