Hinoki is a fragrant species of cypress native to Japan, a majestic evergreen conifer which all Japanese know and adore.
Hinoki's aroma contains compounds (phytoncides) which are scientifically known to be anti-microbial, lower blood pressure, and improve mood.
In 1982, Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries began the shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) initiative -- a national public health program to encourage people to take nature walks.
Today, forest bathing is a popular pastime in Japan and an integral part of preventive care and therapy in Japanese medicine.
