Japanese traditional "Tokigushi" comb, handcrafted from tsuge (boxwood).

Japanese woman combing hair with traditional 'Tokigushi' tsuge wood comb

The smooth, seamless, anti-static teeth glide effortlessly through hair without snagging. You will never want to use synthetic combs again.

Convenient length for engaging all teeth without overloading.

Curved grip for a comfortable hold and balance at various angles as you comb, without bending wrist.

If you use Camellia oil, this comb helps you get more even, better coverage by using less.

❤ Bring Out Hair's Natural Beauty

Tsuge (boxwood) is a super-dense, fine grain hard wood containing numerous microscopic "pores."

As you comb, these tiny pores pick up and re-distribute your hair's oils in super-thin, even layers, bringing out its natural gloss.

❤ Reduce Friz

Unlike plastic combs, tsuge does not generate static electricity when you comb. Works with your hair, rather than against it.

❤ Prevent Damage & Split Ends

Seamless, polished teeth caress hair instead of fighting it. There are no rough seam-lines like in molded combs which can snag causing breakage and split ends.

Comes with handcrafted case. Patterns vary based on availability.

Pre-soaked with Camellia oil and ready to use.

Length - 105 mm
Teeth - 2.3 mm pitch, 1.1 mm gap
Material - Aged Tsuge Boxwood
Handcrafted in Japan

Choosing the Right Comb for Your Hair

  • Hair Type: Most Types*
  • Best For: Primary comb for general use. Versatile.
  • Suitable for All Hair Lengths
* "Most Types" refers to a wide range of hair textures, including straight, wavy, and normal curly hair. For hair types on the extremes of being too delicate, too weak, or too thick and coarse, the wider pitch 98 mm Traditional Comb is a more suitable choice.

About Tsuge and Tokigushi Combs

Tsuge, also known as boxwood, is a small tree which grows very slowly. It takes over thirty years to mature and produces a super-dense, hard wood which Japanese use for making combs with exceedingly high polish and finish.

Tokigushi is the traditional Japanese comb for all-around, everyday use. Toki (a variation of the verb "toku") means untangling. Gushi (or kushi) means comb.

To make a comb, wood is harvested from tsuge trees which are at least 35 years old. Cut pieces are cleaned and smoked to strengthen the wood and remove insects and then stored for drying in a dedicated warehouse. Because of this smoking, tsuge combs give off a pleasant, smoky scent. After that, pieces with the best wood grain are selected for handcrafting in multiple steps of rough-shaping, carving, polishing, and soaking with Camellia oil.

How to Care for Your Comb

Tsuge combs render their best performance when occasionally cleaned with Camellia oil. They also get softer and more polished with time, and the wood becomes darker and richer in color.

The more one realizes how much time is involved in the growing/preparation/crafting of these combs, the greater the appreciation.

    best tool that I own

Posted by Lea on 22nd Jul 2023

For my hair is now the best tool that I own. I have quite a bad experience with combs, but this one is completely a world of it's own, as most of the products at Wawaza shop.

    It's everything.

Posted by Anna on 19th Apr 2023

I never thought I would spend this much (+import taxes!) on a comb. I bought the sukigushi comb as a replacement for my BBB, as it's animal friendly and much, much nicer to handle for me. It does its job, and then some. My hair was the softest it's ever been in my life after using it. I knew I wanted to buy an everyday comb when I started using the cleansing comb on freshly washed hair. I wrote customer service to ask which would be best, and received a detailed, informative response within a day. Wow! I was guided toward this comb for my hair (thick, wavy, down to my waist). I just got it. It's so beautifully packaged, and with so much care. The comb itself is beautiful, too. And I love the casing it comes in. I immediately tried it out and just sat there, combing through my hair. It does exactly what I wanted it to: make my hair ridiculously soft. It's a joy to use. My boyfriend joked about finding me 17h later, still combing my hair. All in all, I'm so grateful to have found this site, and so glad and proud to have moved on purchasing both of my combs. Using them is truly an expression of love toward my hair.

A luxury treatment for your hair

Posted by Min Raj on 29th May 2021

After I wash my hair with funori, I put some camellia oil around this comb and then use it to comb my hair. I cannot explain in words how good this is. It makes your so shiny and soft. At first, I was also little skeptical about price. But after using this for 2 months, I can proudly say that this is the best 120 dollars investment I have made for my hair. If you struggle with dry and rough hair, please do me a favor and buy this tsuge comb. It's incredible. If you take good care of this, it will last you a lifetime. I liked this so much that I gifted this comb to my mother and my sisters. Simply put, this tsuge comb has given incredible results for my hair and I wholeheartedly thank the people who made this comb.

    Wonderful brush

Posted by Emma Gregory on 3rd May 2021

The Tsuge wood brush easily glides through my hair, while distributing the natural hair oils through my hair. As I have quite long hair, this brush is excellent in maintaining hair care especially at the ends which are prone to split ends. The small sample of camellia oil is so refreshing for my hair and helps with split ends too. Arigato Wawaza.
