About Funori

Seaweed is the general term for many species of marine algae. We make our Funori from three important Japanese seaweeds, and nothing else:

• Fukuro-Funori, also known as jelly moss (Gloiopeltis furcata)
• Ma-Kombu, the edible kombu (Saccharina japonica)
• Mekabu, the nutrient-rich roots of Wakame seaweed (Undaria pinnatifida)

These seaweeds are notable for their calcium, magnesium, iron, vitamin K, iodine, and a polysaccharide called fucoidan.

Funori is an abundant source of iodine. Iodine deficiency can contribute to thyroid irregularities associated with dry hair, thinning, poor hair growth, and hair loss.

Funori is also known to reduce hair loss and promote new growth in some individuals. Fucoidan, a polysaccharide found in Funori, has demonstrated the ability to alleviate dryness and promote a healthy hair growth cycle.

How to Use

Cleanse and Condition the Japanese Traditional Way

Prepare the Mixture: Add 1 teaspoon of Funori to 1 cup of hot water in a small container and mix well. A squeeze bottle works well. Use your own or buy one here.

1. Rinse hair with lukewarm water.
2. Apply Funori. Massage gently onto scalp with fingertips.
3. Cleanse hair with straight strokes. Don’t use circular motions, which can tangle your hair.
4. Rinse well.

Deep Treatment

Prepare the mixture as described above, using a little less than half as much water. This makes the mixture slightly more gel-like, so it will not drip down your neckline.

1. Wash hair as normal without using the mixture.
2. Towel dry.
3. Apply mixture.
4. Cover hair with a cap for 15–20 minutes.
5. Rinse well.

Mix with Your Favorite Shampoo

If you like foam and lather, or if you have a favorite shampoo you like to use, you can add the benefits of Funori to your shampoo:

1. Prepare the mixture as described above.
2. Add 2–3 teaspoons of shampoo and mix well.
3. Wash and rinse hair as usual.
