Net Weight: 20 grams (Two 10-gram packs)
Product of Japan

How to Use

Mix with Moisturizer, Cleanser and Liquid or Powder Cosmetics

The "pearl" in the ingredient list of cosmetics is typically hydrolyzed pearl (also called hydrolyzed conchiolin.) It is commonly made by adding chemicals to pearl's proteins for making them water-soluble, plus Phenoxyethanol or Paraben as a preservative.

You can mix Akoya pearl powder with your cosmetics instead — in seconds.

Mix a small amount with your favorite cosmetic. Apply to face, neck, hands or body as you wish. If using soap or cleanser, wash and rinse as usual.

One or two scoops with the provided spatula are sufficient for most applications (One scoop of powder weighs about 0.1 grams.)

Try mixing with our Camellia oil, rice bran moisturizer and additive-free soaps.

Apply as Facial Mask

Akoya will mix almost instantly with almost all powders, oils and other common mask ingredients. Below is a sample recipe.

  1. Take 2 grams of pearl powder
  2. Add 2 tsp of wheat powder (or Shiro Nuka if you like gluten-free)
  3. Add 2 to 3 tsp of water, milk or soy milk
  4. Add other ingredients such as honey or moisturizing oil as you prefer
  5. Mix well. Apply to face for 10 minutes
  6. Rinse with lukewarm water

Apply as Mineral Highlighter or Translucent Setting/Finish Powder

Brush on a small amount over foundation as setting powder. Or, apply over makeup as a finishing powder to blur fine lines and control oil and shine.

The ultra-fine particle size means it will go on translucent when applied thin.

Or, use as a subtle highlighter by applying a little more with a highlighter brush (or Q-tip.)

About Akoya Oysters and Uwajima Bay

Akoya is a saltwater pearl oyster, prized worldwide for its quality. Almost all of Japan's Akoyas come from three seaside bays: Ago Bay (in Mie prefecture), Omura (in Nagasaki) and Uwajima, where we get our supplies.

Nacre is the inner layer of Akoya's shell and the outer coating of the pearl itself.

Akoyas are rare, mainly because they are hyper-sensitive to pollutants and need a clean environment to survive.

Japanese Akoyas account for less than 2% of the world pearl market.

Composition, Luster and Hues

The inner layer of Akoya's shell and the outer coating of the pearl itself is nacre, made of minerals and amino acids in intricate crystalline layers.

94% of the Akoya's nacre is calcium (in the form of calcium carbonate,) magnesium, and iron. 5% of the rest is Conchiolin, a complex protein of 17 amino acids which bond the calcium carbonate crystals together. About 1% is pure water.

Nacre of Akoya pearl oyster has deeper luster and iridescence (orient) compared to other kinds

Akoya nacre crystals have a flatter and more organized microstructure than nacre crystals from other types of oysters.

As a result, Akoyas reflect and refract light in a more organized manner with subtle hues, deeper luster, and iridescence — a fact well-known to gemologists.

Uwajima Bay

Uwajima bay is a pristine body of water in southern Shikoku, the smallest of Japanese main islands

Uwajima bay is a natural body of water in southern Shikoku, the smallest of Japanese main islands, covering approximately 30 square kilometers.

South Shikoku is an ecologically important area, with vast stretches of uninhabited coastline, from Uwajima bay to the imposing cliffs of Cape Ashizuri and Shimanto coast.

The historic Uwajima town has a population of about 77,000 who for centuries have cared for the bay, and depend on its bounty of Akoyas and fishery resources for their livelihood.

    Love it

In my opinion, it‘s not a must have but I truly love it - apart from its nourishing qualities, it adds a subtle pearly shine without making my skin look oily during the day which just looks great!

    My skin

I got this long ago and I forgot where I put it away. Last month, I found it from one of drawers and carefully read how to use it. I have been having a hard time with my dry skin with the winter season. So I have been using this product with Bijin Rice Bran oil for twice a day, WOW MUCH MUCH better! Also, aging spots are getting lighter. What a great combo!

    very reccomended

Posted by Anonymous customer on 13th Feb 2018

I started using this powder in summer, intending it basically as an anti-shine. But then, as I realized how it softened and enhanced my skin texture, I am applying it on a daily basis also now in winter. It doesn't dry my skin at all! - as one usually thinks "a powder" may do. What a special powder this is! So so happy with this product!!

Excellent synergy with the Rice Bran oil

Posted by erika on 8th Apr 2017

I highly recommend this powder mixed with the Bijin oil(they blend together perfectly, seem to be created for each other). This mixture soaks in instantly, leaving the skin soft and moreover very compact. In short time I have treated my thin and flabby skin on the neck . It does a remarkable “boosting” action, great support to the oil itself.
    Very very valuable combination.

    Soft Glow

Posted by NutmegsMom on 24th Feb 2017

I love this product. This website educated me on the natural orgin of pearl essence and the minerals in it. I use it with my Bijin oil on my face and neck. Its thick consistency protects my skin and I feel a difference after the first use. I continue to use this wonderful product twice a day with no need for makeup (I like the natural look, hyperpigmentation and all). The Nuka I use to cleanse and the Bijin oil both seem to soften the hyperpigmentation so it looks nice not garish.

The soft diffusing properties of the nacre is aesthetically pleasing too.

Thanks for a great product! I'll keep all three products stocked for my optimal skincare.

    Facial mask

Posted by Anonymous customer on 5th Dec 2016

This does NOT need to be avoided o the eye contour area as most of the face masks - actually is VERY RECCOMENDED for the little lines/wrinkles around the eyes, as for the few times I have applied it, they already have visibly diminished. Only before spreading, make sure it is not too warm as temperature for that delicate area.

    Face mask

Posted by Sarah on 4th Dec 2016

I would like to share an AMAZING and super simple face mask I figured out with this pearl powder. The other ingredient is Carragheenan (lat. "chondrus crispus" - a seaweed) powder. Take of it 2,5g and add 0.3-0.5g pearl powder - mix them well together. Then slowly pour this mixture into 40ml very warm( (distilled is better) water while stirring it vividly(the water) with a mini electric twister (or something similar - to avoid lumps). Let it cool down some minute, the carragheen will form a good jelly texture. Spread on face and neck & keep on for 15-20 mins. Then rinse off well, and done! Great results for a glowing and silky skin, just with these 2 ingredients!!

    Very good quality

Posted by nicole on 20th Nov 2016

Very versatile product. Basically it softens the shin, smoothens the texture. And this powder has also a slight mattifying effect, so it’s great in combination with pure oils to balance some shiny effect. In addition to other moisturizers, seem to ‘fix’ and absorb it better.

    Lovely natural glow

Posted by Natali N. on 5th Oct 2016

This is a very lovely pearl powder! I’ve been using it for a few days now and really like the effect it is having on my skin. It seems to create a beautiful natural glow that appears as if it is coming from the inside of my skin. It also arrived very quickly and was packaged with great care - I even love the little pouch in comes in and the spatula is very helpful for measuring. The fact that this is an all-natural product with no additives, preservatives, etc. is why I’m such a big fan of Wawaza and their commitment to creating high quality products. The customer service is also the best. Very happy customer - will definitely be back - Arigatou!
