How to Brew Hatomugi Cha

Japanese Senjiru Method

Senjiru is a time-tested Japanese method for brewing herbal teas. The basic steps are a rapid boil, followed by simmer and then a cool-down period.

The following instructions are for brewing two 250 ml (8 oz) cups of Hatomugi Cha.

  • Add 1 rounded tablespoon to 2 cups of water.
  • Heat to a full, rolling boil.
  • Turn heat down. Simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Turn heat off and wait for 10 minutes.

Strain and serve hot, chilled or over ice.

Tips for best flavor and maximum goodness

  • Always use fresh, good quality water (but not distilled water). If using tap water, let it run cold for at least 10 seconds before using it.
  • Use a non-reactive kettle such as glass, ceramic, stainless steel, enamel or cast iron. Avoid using kettles made from aluminum.

Product Reviews

  1. Refreshing.

Posted by Valtiel on 28th Jun 2018

To start this off, I haven't finished the bag. Just this week, i've been able to consume this tea regularly. So, i'm not a hundred percent sure that I can see a difference in my skin, with this alone. That could change in a month of regular consumption though!

Inner affects? I'm not feeling bloated. Especially during the mooncycle, this time around! It seems to work, in conjunction with black sugar tea. No cramps!

Taste: Popcorn and sweet grass. With an overall midtone of nutty tang in the back of the mouth.

Aroma: Roasted grass for me. Which is nice!
And the seeds taste a bit like maple!

  2. Soothing clean pure tea!

Posted by Melanie on 2nd Sep 2017

When I drink this, it feels cleansing and soothing, calming. It has a slight sweetness with an herbal woody aroma and delicate flavor. As everything else from here, the experience is fully enjoyable and I look forward to trying more! Gentle is how I'd describe this. I'm very happy to have tried this and finished so quickly! Will be back! <3 :)
